30th Anniversary Blend

To celebrate Irving Farm’s 30th anniversary, we wanted to create a blend that features two of our oldest and most significant producer relationships. This 50/50 blend of Santa Isabel and Monserrate highlights two coffees that we’re proud to have been buying for over a decade. At the same time, they also represent two of our favorite expressions of coffee with big sweetness, citric acidity, and balanced profiles that as coffee lovers, we can’t get enough of.

30th Anniversary Blend

We created this blend to celebrate Irving Farm’s 30th anniversary and reflect on what we have accomplished and what inspires us about the future. As you enjoy this coffee, we appreciate your support and the important role you play in making this work possible.

Irving Farm was founded in 1996, when Steve Leven and David Elwell opened a cafe in Gramercy. Now, 30 years later, we’re looking back at everyone who has been a part of our 30 year journey in New York Coffee. Above all else, we’re grateful to the customers who buy our coffee, and the coffee producers who grow and process the coffee that we roast and serve. With our 30th anniversary blend, we tried to make a product to capture our gratitude and celebrate 30 years of Irving Farm Coffee Roasters.

The coffees in this blend are Santa Isabel, from Guatemala, and Monserrate, from Colombia. Irving Farm has been buying coffee from Alex and Martin Keller at Santa Isabel since 2012, and from the Monserrate group since 2013. Both coffees are staff favorites. Irving Farm’s Director of Coffee, Jay, has been blending them in his kitchen for years whenever both coffees are available. He considers it an absolutely perfect cup of coffee, and it’s a delight to finally share it with Irving Farm customers. As you enjoy a cup of the 30th Anniversary Blend, here’s what makes these two producers so special.

Santa Isabel

Santa Isabel is an organic, practicing biodynamic farm in the Santa Rosa Department of Southeastern Guatemala, near the Honduran border. Managed by brothers Alex and Martin Keller, the farm has been in their family since 1899. Irving Farm has been a partner since 2012, and each visit brings new inspiration from its coffee and agriculture.

After being heavily impacted by coffee leaf rust in the 2010s, the Kellers converted to organic agriculture. Today, Santa Isabel is a model of carefully managed organic agroforestry. Walking through the farm feels more like being in a forest than on a conventional coffee farm. Mature shade trees shelter coffee and native plants, while birds, bees, and endangered native bee species thrive. Alex approaches farming as a conversation with the forest, observing everything from birdsong and humidity to the microbial life on sticks and rocks. Here, coffee is not simply a crop to be harvested, but part of a carefully managed ecosystem. Through biodynamic practices, the farm also embraces the mystical and spiritual dimensions of agriculture. Time spent at Santa Isabel can change how one sees the intelligence of plants, animals, and microbial life. A cup of its coffee is as much a poem as it is a beverage.

For Irving Farm, it is a privilege to buy coffee from Santa Isabel and support the Kellers’ agricultural practices and community work, including a local school, a clinic, and a large protected natural reserve. As Irving Farm turns 30, Santa Isabel—with 127 years of history—is an inspiration: a business that continues to evolve and improve.

Monserrate

Monserrate is produced by a group of around 75 smallholder coffee farmers in Huila, south-central Colombia, known as Productores Para el Nuevo Milenio, or ProAgroMil. Named for the small mountain community where the producers are based, Monserrate sits in the steep, lush Andes, where differences in elevation, soil, sun, and temperature create distinct microclimates. Each producer ferments washed coffees at their own small mill, resulting in remarkable diversity within a small geographic area. As individual lots, these coffees are sparkling and distinctive; blended together, they create exceptional depth.

Beyond the quality of the coffee, Monserrate is an example of how international collaboration can improve economic security in rural Colombia. Once a significant coca-growing region, the community has worked to establish coffee as a viable economic alternative. Today, renewed instability has made it too dangerous for international buyers to visit. We remain committed to being a consistent partner, buying their coffee and paying equitable prices. We believe reliable economic opportunities are essential to sustaining communities and reducing dependence on coca cultivation.

Monserrate’s success is supported by RaCafe, a family-owned Colombian exporter that has worked with the group since 2008, and Atlas Coffee Importers. Together, they help producers improve quality, connect with buyers, and earn premium prices. Irving Farm has been a partner since 2013. In 2018, we began working with RaCafe, Atlas, and the NGO Solidaridad on a sustainable pricing model to ensure producers receive an economically viable price for their coffee. Our contributions have supported wastewater treatment systems, drying infrastructure, and emergency relief following landslides. The program has since evolved into a sustainability premium that allows other roasters to participate.
